The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) announced the winners of the coveted 2018 Elijah Watt Sells Award. BerryDunn’s David Stone, CPA, MBA, CFE, was honored as a recipient. The award recognizes a cumulative average score above 95.50 across all four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination on the first attempt. Of nearly 86,000 candidates to sit for the exam, only 110 qualified for the award this year.
David Stone is a staff accountant in BerryDunn’s Financial Services and Employee Benefits Groups. He provides audit and accounting services to a wide range of clients, including financial institutions, broker-dealers and employee benefit plans. As a Certified Fraud Examiner, he supports BerryDunn's forensic accounting engagements, assisting with the investigation, detection and prevention of suspected fraudulent activity. Stone is a graduate of the University of Southern Maine, with a BS in Accounting and Economics. He also holds an MBA from Thomas College.
“I could not be more honored to be the recipient of such a prestigious award in the accounting profession. However, although it is only my name displayed, this is just as much an award for myself as it is for the organizations that helped me achieve this award. The University of Southern Maine, Thomas College, and BerryDunn all played an integral part in my preparation for the CPA exam. This award is truly a testimony to the caliber of professors and professionals at these organizations,” said Stone.
The Elijah Watt Sells Award program was established by the AICPA in 1923 to recognize outstanding performance on the CPA Exam. The AICPA, which owns and scores the CPA Exam, works with hundreds of volunteers and other stakeholders to maintain its relevance to the profession. Similarly, volunteerism plays a heavy role in Stone’s life, as he was previously a Loaned Executive of the United Way of Greater Portland and has volunteered at Habitat for Humanity and the Waterville Food Bank.
